Morandi Anna, SELF PORTRAIT IN WAX
Museo Palazzo Poggi Universita' di Bologna.jpg
What an incredible image, this was sent to me from Milan this evening. It is a self portrait in wax of a female brain surgeon in the middle of neurosurgery whilst wearing the finest selection of clothes and jewellery .
I was not aware of female neurosurgeons practicing in the 1700s.
This piece of art reminds me of the surreal autopsies during my medical school years in the renowned University of Pavia when one of our professors was a high heeled and extremely well dressed woman in diamond earrings who would put on a white lab coat and just get on with the most extreme forensic autopsies. When finished she would exit rather dramatically and be driven to lunch somewhere smart and chic, none of the other diners would ever have suspected that only a few hours earlier she had been slicing brains and inner organs.
